"Digging Hill" Hike
Getting There
The Pu'u Ma'eli'eli trail head is a little more difficult to find as it is located next to a busy road behind a guard rail. There is street parking across the Valley of the Temples Memorial Park, or parking is available in the shopping center across from the park. Once parked, walk along the Kahekili highway about 50 yards before reaching the trailhead.
Our Hiking Adventure
The Pu'u Ma'eli'eli Trail, also known as "Digging Hill Hike", has a little bit of everything...mountain views, beach views, rainforest terrain, rocky terrain, slight elevation, and bunkers. Located in Kaneohe, the trail is 2.3 miles with around a 600ft elevation gain.
The amazing views from the top show off an array of ocean colors in the Kaneohe Bay, and off in the distance, Chinaman's Hat (Mokolii) can be viewed...it was the perfect picnic spot!
We all enjoyed exploring the bunkers before reaching the top, and of course searching for geocaching treasures on the way up and back down.
I highly recommend downloading the geocaching app and incorporating geocaching searches, or "treasure hunting" as we like to call it, on your family hikes. It's a great way to keep kids motivated during longer more strenuous hikes. Overall the Pu'u Ma'eli'eli Trail is a great family hiking adventure!!
